Algebra is a branch of mathematics that uses letters to represent unknown quantities (called variable), and symbols for operations such as addition and subtraction. These can be combined in an algebraic statement known as an expression.

Equations in which the highest power of an unknown quantity is two are known as quadratic equations, and those in which the highest power is three are called cubic equations.[1]
